The Wildlife Conservation Society works to protect land and sea wildlife and their environments around the world. They also own the five New York zoos and aquariums: The Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, New York Aquarium, Prospect Park Zoo, and Queens Zoo.
A new mark and system was created to convey both wildlife and environments along with a sense of urgency. The stamp symbol and color represented both jungle canopy and ocean.
This system was in place for eleven years before a new W monogram design by Pentagram was introduced in 2015. Fortunately, it appears to be a slow roll-out and over eight years later quite a few of the signs are still in place.

The Wildlife Solid typeface was created by Annika Kappenstein based on a vintage rubber stamp alphabet kit that she picked up in Czechoslovakia several years earlier.
This was a perfect example of how certain types of designers collect and wait: objects, materials, random things assembled and filed to experiment with or for their purpose to be revealed months or years later for the right brief.

A special-use version of the signature with the WCS acronym was created for small sizes in digital and embroidery.
